The wassail cup in Tudor times contained a hot and spicy punch passed around at Christmas time to the sound of Waes Hael - 'Be Whole' or 'Good Health'.

On 12th January, neighbours went from house to house with the wassail cup and song, rewarded by small presents, a tradition that has continued in some form or another by carol singers, first footers and even 'trick or treat'.  The wassail cup has disappeared but the concept of 'rewards' holds firm.

The Leominster Morris

When cider and cider making became such a staple of rural life, the cider orchards were wassailed to bring good fortune to the crop in the coming year and ward off any lurking evil spirits.

There is a strong tradition of song, dance and verse in the wassail so look at these dates and see if you can join us for a Herefordshire Wassail.
